At the large park in this small coastal village, a brand new allotment is being constructed. Jamila–born to a local man Ogande Pangna-Ng and his English wife Annette–has her own flower business, which she started on a small budget from her parents.

From an early age Jamila exhibited talent by growing plants and flowers. At the age of eight she had her own plot in the family garden and by the time she was 15 she was selling her flowers to local people. She earned a nice little wage from this, but wanted to expand. When she left school her parents, bought a van and she started travelling further afield for deliveries.

Her mother says, “Since she could read she would consume gardening books by the cartload. She learned about planting in season and she learned about the best soil and compost before she was even ten years old. She had her own vegetable garden too, but it was really flowers and plants that held her interest. Jamila now has her own business and she employs a local girl to help her.”

Jamila’s father, Ogande—who was born in the village—said “I am most proud of my daughter. She has an enterprising nature and she has already employed a young girl, who helps to bring money to her poor family. She is an example to all young people that they can achieve anything they put their minds to.”

Jamila also gives a large percentage of her salary to a charity, based in the small village, to help the most needy families.
